Why this bike?
The complicated, short answer: An impulsive idea to help a friend get a new bike under his butt while getting a new bike under my own. Nothing is ever as simple as it seems at the moment the idea strikes, but in the end, everything worked out for everyone involved.
The easy, long answer: I rented a 2007 FJR (in Black Cherry) in Colorado, and spent a few days in the Four Corners area. It convinced me I wanted a true sport-tourer, with its integrated luggage and smooth shaft drive. A couple years later I rented a 2006 FJR (in Cobalt Blue) to tour the Canadian Rockies. By the end of that trip, I was convinced the FJR was the sport-tourer for me.
While the Kawasaki Concours features a slightly larger engine and gets great reviews, the FJR is the sportiest-looking of the class, and thousands of miles on challenging roads convinced me I would be happier with the FJR.
2008 and 2009 saw Yamaha release the FJR in Raven Black, a lovely metallic black. But after owning a black car, I was sure I never wanted another black vehicle of any kind. The 2010 model came in a slick Liquid Silver (as did the 2011 model), and I bought it as soon as I found one in the Metro area.
So, the 2012 model in Cobalt Blue was a no-brainer…I had no complaints about the 2010 model, and the current model is unchanged other than making the heated grips, which I installed as an OEM accessory, a factory standard feature.
